Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape or reposition the ears. The surgery is commonly used to correct protruding or overly large ears, or to repair earlobes that have been stretched or torn due to trauma or heavy earrings.

The procedure involves making incisions behind the ear to access the cartilage, which is then reshaped and repositioned as necessary. The surgeon may also remove excess skin or cartilage to achieve the desired results. Once the ear has been reshaped, the incisions are closed using sutures.

Ear surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to normal activities within a week or two. Results are generally long-lasting, with minimal scarring.

Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants are small electronic devices that are surgically implanted into the inner ear to help provide a sense of sound to individuals with severe hearing loss or deafness. The implant consists of an external microphone and speech processor that is worn behind the ear, and an implanted electrode array that is placed directly in the cochlea.

The microphone and speech processor work together to convert sound into electrical signals, which are then transmitted to the implanted electrode array. The array stimulates the auditory nerve fibers in the cochlea, which sends signals to the brain that are interpreted as sound.

Cochlear implants are typically recommended for individuals who have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, which means that they have damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve. The surgery to implant the device is typically performed under general anesthesia, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. Recovery time varies, but most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks.

Cochlear implants can provide significant benefits for individuals with severe hearing loss, including improved speech comprehension and better overall quality of life. However, the surgery and rehabilitation process can be complex, and not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure.
